I too have had good luck with Amtrak, but the freight agents generally try to discourage shipping fragile items such as musical instruments. In order to optimize space, they stack boxes whenever possible. Large items, like tubas, tend to wind up on the bottom of the pile. I have used Amtrak twice and not had any problems but I reinforced the boxes with 1x2's just to be safe.
I absolutly concur with Greg. Insure, insure, insure! Amtrak's insurance rates are very resonable. I don't know how they are about paying claims. Fortunately, I have never had to find out.
