As an 11 year former supervisor in every aspect of operations at UPS, I can tell you without a doubt that their system is NOT set up to handle large, delicate items. I don't mean this as a slam to the company, as they do many things very well. My last 2 years there I was in charge of damages and rewraps at a major hub in St. Louis. I've actually seen a trumpet in nothing more that a paper bag come through- bad idea! Keep in mind that damgages can be caused mainly by three things: poor packaging, mishandling, and system "jams". You can completely control the first variable: always use a hard case and a box with peanuts to be safe.
