The lowest open tone (the fundamental pitch of its harmonic series) on a BBb tuba is BBb. The tubing on a CC tuba is a bit shorter than on a BBb, and its lowest open tone is CC. Therefore, the CC is pitched a step higher, and takes a different set of fingerings because bass clef instrument music is not transposed, except for British brass band music.
The standard range open tones on BBb are: Bb, F, Bb, D, F, and Bb. On CC: C, G, C, E, G, C.
