Ian, you have the seed of a wonderful idea! A course for student's "handyman" parents that tells them what NOT to do to "help out". Mandatory before the kid gets to take the instrument home.
I've got a tuba here where some (well-meaning?) soul tried to remove the top cap from a rotary valve using a chisel and a hammer. He managed to knock the stop pin off in the process and glued it back on with a great blob of epoxy.
