I know exactly what you mean. After awhile, it feels like 6/4 in and 3/4 out. I am often the only tuba in my community band rehearsals, and the piggy often just doesn't cut it for that type of playing. My next move is a smallish 5/4 that will allow all around playing, but be geared more toward the big stuff. I also don't know whether I'll keep the blunderbuss or not, because it has a terrific sound at reasonable dynamics, and I can't think of a better CC horn for quintet. I hope I can find a larger horn that has a sound I like as much.

You CAN help the projection a bit. Mine went up dramatically when I switched from a standard Helleberg to a PT-48. So you might try a few different mouthpieces to find one that can give a little more oomph.
