Pictures at an Exhibition was originally scored for a French C tuba. This is basically a tuba that is on full octave above our friend the CC contrabass tuba. It's very large bore and has usually six valves to get thoses low notes. The combination I found that works the best is use a Bb euphonium on Bydlo and my CC on the rest of the piece. A tuba pitched in E might work. How does it navigate the low sections in "Pictures"? It's obvious that Ravel orchestrated this for a FRENCH orchestra. It was standard practice to use that ridiculous tuning nightmare of a tuba in France. Only recently have they come to thier senses and started using bass and contrabass tubas.
