I have recently purchased a Highams 5 Valve euphonium made in Manchester, England on or before 1911.
It has been restored to playing condition and I use it on recitals quite a lot.
The tuning is no where near as good as a compensated 4 valve but the whole instrument is a lot more free blowing. By the time the bore opens up to the 5th. valve its huge and you can get great fat notes using that valve alone.
The comp. system has never been bettered but these euphs are great fun and offer a different sound as well.
