The serpent probably fell out of favor when the "bass" version of the keyed bugle, the ophicleide, began to gain popularity with more resonance, and intonation options.

The ophicleide probably fell by the wayside in deference to the tuba due to the volume of sound that (even small) tubas were capable of producing when compared to ophicleides.

I think that there continues to be discussion as to what a "cimbasso" (early 19th century interpretation of that word) actually WAS, so I'll offer no comment on the cimbasso.
