The compensating system is not designed to fix out of tune partials, but to fix the sharpness with the fourth valve down. For example on euph, the first valve is designed to bring the instrument in Bb down one half step. If one puts the fourth valve down, then this length is no longer enough to bring the horn down a half step. Extra tubing in a compensating horn is added to "compensate" for this. If the compensating system really did fix out of tune partials, then why are the F's so durn sharp on most euphs?
