You make it sound like John is some ape who has the freedom to do whatever he wants, commander be damned. He is a sensitive musician and makes good decisions, as do just about everyone else in his band. Doing what the commander, ensemble, section, and music demands are near the top of the list. Sure, just about every tubist has played a pedal note or two in bands. The main point most of us are trying to make is that descretion should be used when independently adding or removing notes from one part of an ensemble.

What you, a tubist, might think sounds neat, might not be so musical to the commander, conductor, audience, clarinets, euphoniums, and fellow section players. It can even come across as arrogant when you do it on your own. Reputations are built through your daily choices.

The original poster made an assertion that the adding of basso octaves in their parts made them sound better than other tuba sections they compared themselves to. If the high school section had players with the chops to pull this off effectivelly, then they may have had the chops to play the other 99.99999% of the notes in the concert with some finesse. I doubt it was 2 or three final chords with really low notes that won over the audience.

As far as anonymous postings detracting from one's effectiveness as a conveyer of ideas, it most certainly makes a difference. Using a false name, or an anonymous name, or blocking caller id, or refusing to sign a contract takes credence away from your reliability. Perhaps you do have great ideas, but fewer people will consider them unless you are willing to accept the praise or criticism which your actions or words may bring.

By never committing yourself to yourself you may come across as cowardice.
