Being a non-New Yorker who has lived extremely close to New York all my life (10-20 minutes in light traffic), I'm going to have to say yes. My band director (who lives farther away from the city than I do), plays gigs in the city regularly. Plus, a great deal of people live hhere in the Northern Jersey area and commute daily to the city for work...it's a hell of a lot cheaper that way. The only downside to commuting is dealing with the traffic, but thhere are ways around that. My personal favorite way into New York is taking the ferry...a nice, relaxing ride, you don't have to fight with traffic, and there are free shuttle buses to take you all over Manhattan once you get to New York. So yes, the New York experience is possible if you live outside the city, and it's a whole lot cheaper.
