Good ideas...but nail polish might be a bit much. Gold plating can be done to a "used" . Just like with a new one it needs to be properly polished and cleaned and normally a silver plate is used before the gold. Schilke can do a very good job for you, just as one example.
You may be getting to the brass before you even notice that the old silver plate is worn through.
