I've used something similar to these, but I'm not sure they're the same. The description fits, though. The whole spectrum is lessened, you can hear speech, and your own sound is magnified in your ears. This latter is what I wanted to address....in loud bands, it's always been a problem to hear myself, to the point where I can't even tell if I'm playing in tune. (I can get on the right note just by feeling the vibrations, but it could be flat or sharp.) Blowing hard enough to hear myself is not good for either the music or my chops....so it is really an advantage to hear myself in the "head cold" way, because I can tell whether I'm in tune. (I play horn, so I'm not the basement note like you guys are, and it's really easy for the sound to get lost, except for the poor (?) timpani player behind my bell.)
