In my experience, using both can be useful. The bag is nice in terms of weight and ease of handling, but when using it you should be careful. My last three cars have been four door models so that I could put my horn in the back seat easily. You do have to be aware of your soroundings, and if you need to use mass transit (commuter bus, light rail, etc.), please be careful! I have a huge Unitec case for travelling. When I am on a tour or travelling with a group, the tubas always end up going in the equipment truck, and the case is heavy duty enough to fend for itself with all of the heathen percussion stuff. It is a bit combersome though, and it has wheels. If you need the protection of a case, make sure you get one with wheels, your arms will appreciate it.
