Wow --
Obviously, then, not all nickel is created the same. My Czech-built 1970's Zeiss hasn't had any problems of that sort with its nickel finish. In fact, the only way I had left to improve its appearance was to clean & polish the unplated brass down inside the bell, giving the interior a gold-colored glow. Everywhere else, the nickel virtually doesn't ever tarnish, and any cleaning is to clean off water spots. It also hasn't peeled, split, or anything like that.

I've also heard stories about the St. Pete's poorly produced nickel plating, such as tearing lint off of cheesecloth when it was rubbed on the supposedly smooth & shiny areas. Despite that, it really does play OK, and I'd say that it would be a worthwhile horn with a differently-produced finish. That doesn't mean I'd buy one, but that's just me.

Seeya,
Leland
