This has doesn't have much to do with the original posting (Patrick Harrild is the player), but it's a great story.

We were fortunate enough to have teaching here in Brisbane, Australia, a man by the name of Alan Cumberland. Alan was considered by Georg Solti to be the best timpanist ever born (no bull). Alan was came to us from London, where he played with LPO and Phillip Jones amongst others.

Anyhow, one of Alan's former students, Simon Carrington, is currently principal Timpanist with LSO. A percussionist colleague of mines girlfriend went to London last year. Being a student of Alan's, he knows Simon and she spent a day with him. Just so happens that on that particular day, Simon was doing the Star Wars session.

So, Karen spent a day with George Lucas and various other movie people in the studio at Abbey Road, watching the LSO record Star Wars. Simon 'smuggled' her in saying that she was his girlfriend. Some people get all the luck!!!

PS - Karen informs us that Star Wars was basically sight read on the day, what you here on the soundtrack is more often than not, the first take!
