Todd,

The 5th valve is used primarily for intonation in the low register. Combinations of valves such as 1-3, 1-4, 1-3-4 etc. are sharp and the more/longer valve loops that are put in, the sharper it is. There is no 'standard' for a 5th valve. Some are a half-step, some are a flat whole-step and some are other things. The B&S PT4 has a 'two step' 5th valve slide but I don't know what the steps are.

Get a tuner and start experimenting with the lower notes i.e. below F#. It will become clear what you can do.

Enjoy your new horn. I played a PT3P and really liked it. I couldn't justify the expense, however!
