The best reason for using a fine abrasive in a paste form is that the places that are binding and causing the slide to be hard to pull are the places that will remove the most metal leaving more metal where the slide isn't binding. If you use sandpaper or steelwool you will be removing metal from the entire inner slide. Also you have to removing all the metal from the inner slide only. Using a paste will remove metal from both the inner slide and the outer slide. A lot of times, just few passes will remove corrosion on the inside of the outer slide allowing the slide function well. As the others have stated, it is extremely important to thoroughly clean all of the abrasive out the horn.
