He's very well respected in the jazz community as a jazzer who happens to play tuba.. not just by other tubists, either. He might not be known on the level of Howard Johnson, but I'd say he's a close second. I think what some people seem to be doing is making their judgements based on his recording chronology, in which case I can understand the sentiments..I just don't think that remotely reflects who he is as a musician, and a true jazzer. Ask him about his schedule some time, and compare the amount of jazz clinics, jazz festivals, jazz seminars, and jazz concerts he works to the amount of tuba/classical/etc stuff he does.
or just meet him.. then try to not think of him as a jazzer.
