There's two reasons why thumb rings unintentionally break off:
1) mis-use, like repeatedly picking a horn up by the thumb ring (yipes!)
2) bad ergonomics, repeated stress on the mount (by your thumb not fitting comfortably)
eventually breaks the weld/mount hardware
I had a very very comfy thumb ring made up by Dan Oberloh for one of my tubas and it is SO nice I will have the exact same size/shape ring made up for the rest of my horns (at least the next time one goes in for an overhauls :-)
