Pumpen Horn:

Rick and Chuck have pointed to the acoustical benefits. I agree with them on that point.

The Wiener Pumpen even are light in weight, as they are not loaded with more than one "through" tubing each. And their diameter is is small compared to normal pistons. They don't have massive brass blocks like in rotary instruments. All that contributes to the acoustical characteristiscs.

But at least the Wiener Pumpen Hörner like mine in F, F#, A, or Bb (depending on crooks, coupler, and slides) have very long, thin, and flexible brass rods connecting the lever system and the individual bridges between the individual pairs of pistons. The valve response is not as immediate and positive like on good piston instruments, which are the best ones in that regard.

Take the swampiness of any rotor system and quintuple it.

Klaus

PS: My sample is from the Wiener Hornmanufaktur, but the Yamaha, which I also have tried. suffered the same problem.
