... undepressed the air goes straight through both valves associated with a given slide bypassing the slide tubing, depressed the valves move to direct the airflow 90 degrees (or so) into or from the slide tubing from or into the air path. Modern piston/ rotary valves do the same thing but with more passages incorporated in one valve halving the overall valve requirement.
