I've had the same experience.....at the IHS (horn) workshop last summer, the soloist in one concert held a note through several sniffs....and I found the sound very distracting.
However, when I play tuba in the orchestra, I wish I could circular breathe; I suspect that the audience would not be able to hear the sniffing over the sound of the group as a whole, and my note would not drop out and come back over the course of several measures.
Also, when I hear dijeridoo players...the sniffing is nowhere near as obvious; I don't know why this is.
But for the origianl poster.....if you have a deviated septum blocking your breathing, that can be fixed. A physical problem like that can also cause major snoring and sleep problems and is worth checking out with a medical professional.
