I heard Floyd Cooley perform at a tuba-euph symposium at North Texas back in the early eighties. Although I have heard a number of really tremendous sounding tuba players, for my money I haven't heard one I like better.

I would like to agree with those who distinguish that different types of sound are called for to fit the occasion or the ensemble. Some that come to mind are: orchestra, band, small ensemble, solo. Then there are different sounds for different styles. Among those are classical, jazz, pop, avant garde, and even polka band. All of these can be played with a great sound. The exact definition of that great sound will change from medium to medium(and style to style, etc.).

I have enjoyed hearing the various responses in this thread. The world indeed has some fine playing tuba players.
