I try to pick out a tuba where it is so close in-tune for me that I don't have to do all that. If that is not possible, then doing whatever is necessary to get it in tune is justified. I just like to do that with my breath, lips, and as little slide-moving as possible.
When I want to move a slide, I pull out my bass trombone ;^)
