If you look on page 3, "Beginnings" and then on page 6, "NYO and Cambridge Days", by Derek Bourgeious there is a great over view of his early development and the self taught idea. Although, if you read through the entire book you will also find that there is some wonderful insight by Denis Wick, who John studied briefly with (p44) and Wick also mentions John's brief study with Clem Lawton. Yes, you're right, there is no "bio", but all of the information needed for a bio is in the book. Interesting book which should be in every tuba players library.
