I remember seeing Markus Hoetzel at the Army Band conference in 1999...I was sitting with my teacher (Phil Sinder) and a few students from the studio and and almost everyone looking at each other simultaneously and saying "Daaaamn..." Prof. Sinder said something to the effect of "Wow - that's a great tone" We had seen many players since then, and none caused that type of reaction.
And since I mentioned him, I'd like to add Phil Sinder to the list - effortless, liquid playing. It doesn't get a whole lot better than him.
