Definitely didn't mean to knock on Pat in any way--sorry if it seemed that way.

I just don't think that "solo tuba" is a sound concept I'd consider "best tone quality."

My reference point is a copy of the CSO performing the 1812 overture. I assume it's Mr. Jacobs on tuba, but it could be someone else. Regardless, the sound--that "thick pillow" under the orchestra--is what I call "Best tone quality."

And, truth be told, everytime I listen to Danny Boy played by Pat Sheridan, I nearly wet myself listening to that high F. It literally sounds like the horn is singing. And I wish I could play that note that well.

Mr. Sheridan may make more money; I frankly don't know. I do know, however, that I'd rather listen to an orchestra witha GOOD tuba player perform Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 than hear Mr. Sheridan play anything.

I guess I see virtuoso soloism as a novelty (although a profitable one) rather than a worthwhile musical experience.

Just another $.02
