A sleeping bag makes a decent gig bag with very little modification.
An ordinary cotton handkerchief can be wrapped around a tuba mouthpiece and tucked into the cup for protection when the mouthpiece is in your case or in your pocket. It's a lot easier to wash than other mp cases I have seen.
A bungee cord can be rigged up to pull a valve slide back in so you don't have to push it back.
Soft plastic foam works better than cork on tuba mutes.
