Hard to form an opinion since I have not heard that many orche$tra concerts, but the best live sound I recall hearing was Michael Sanders with St. Louis and at a clinic. My favorite recordings of a living tubist in an orchestra would be Floyd Cooley in San Francisco. Solo sound is Michael Lind hands down. He is hypnotic. Floyd Cooley's recordings come in a close second on my favorite hit parade for sound on solos.

Other notables that I like to recall from memory are Rostapovich, Herseth, Pavorati, Marice Andre, Dale Clevenger in a live orchestral setting, Rex Martin, Christian Lindburgh, Vladamir Horovitz, and Charles Vernon on tenor bone.

My favorite sounds are cello and trumpet when they are played well. Tuba solos in general don't really do it for me. Maybe my ear is tuba tired.
