I didn't come up with either of these. However, the two tools I use which help me the most are the DEG tuba rest and the Ultimate B.E.R.P. The ultimate burp helps, too, especially after a few beers.

Anyway, for me, resting the instrument on the chair causes the mouthpiece to be too high to reach comfortably, and holding it on my lap prevents me from reaching and pulling the first/third valve slides. The DEG tuba rest helps me solve these issues.

I have always been a huge advocate of mouthpiece practice, and the BURP allows me to play things on the MP while holding and fingering the instrument, then immediately playing the same passage on the tuba, a great practice aid.
