While I agree that the texas all-state band is a great honor and there is amazingly great young talent that takes part in this event. However not every young kid that makes the band is a great musician or even competant. If you don't realize, the etudes for every level of state try-outs are given out 5-6 months in advance. What this leads to in some cases are students that don't play anything for 6 months but the same three pieces. These pieces are at times literally beat into their heads. This leads to kids that can play three pieces of music but can't sightread a simple solo or play all their scales. There is also no sightreading or scale requirment at and of the auditions which further promotes this problem.
