The farther the signal source is from the beginning of the vibrating column of air (lips from the mouthpipe throat) the more the signal will be dampened or muffled (ie. "darker").

The narrower the support (cup width at the rim of the mouthpiece) for the vibrating diaphram (signal source - lips) the fewer the number of sine waves that can be generated on that diaphram. As the diaphram is made shorter and shorter (less and less lips buzzing in the mouthpiece) the more important it is that that diaphram vibrate with more and more control to offer an acceptably "pure" signal ( potentially pretty sound) to the vibrating air column.
