Another option is the NON-ADHESIVE padded bicycle handlebar tape. Any adhesive will eventually eat the lacquer, and even if it doesn't, whatever you use to remove the goo will. And you'll have to remove the goo at some point, because you'll want to expose what you have been protecting. Otherwise, you wouldn't need the protection.

I put sleeves on my Miraphone not to protect the horn, but to keep my arm (or sweat-soaked shirt-sleeve) from turning green when I played it in the Texas heat and humidity. I've never had the problem with my unlacquered York Master here in Virginia, even though it does occasionally get warm here.

I use a tuba rest instead of the chair edge on which to rest the horn.

For the original poster, if your section mate can't keep his 20J bell edge to himself, then bring a hammer to rehearsal, and brandish it menacingly every time he tilts his horn. He'll get the point.
