I was listening to a new "Alexander Nevsky" with the Kirov Orchestra from St. Petersburg. The tuba was very solid and meaty. Just guessing, I'd say the player is using nothing bigger than a 4/4 or 5/4. It sounds more like a CC than a BBb to me. However, I'm just guessing, and you never know until you REALLY know. This recording comes with a really hot "Scythian Suite". It's on Philips, and Valery Gergiev is conducting. I'd like Gergiev/Kirov do Prokofiev #5.
