I don't think either type of valve has been engineered to its optimum form yet, at least not in tubas. Why, for instance, aren't valve pistons manufactured with an surface consisting of annular rings, rather than a single smooth surface? It seems like the ribbed design would involve less surface contact and thus, less friction.
