I agree with Doug here. I am 6'2" 185lbs and play a 5/4 rudy CC tuba. Prior to this year, I had never bothered with a stand. I figured that they were for "wimps", and thought it would not allow for me to feel in physical control over my instrument. This year, I tried using a stand, on a whim, and it allows for me to position my horn exactly where I want it.. every time.

Another player, Ed Diefes, In Syracuse who is about 6'6" and built like an ox also uses a stand with his 2165. I used to poke fun at hime, but now I see the real benefits from using this aid. By all means, I'd encourage you to delve into the realm of big tubas, Mary Ann. you'll find that most take very little effort to produce enormous sounds, popular to contrary belief.
