why? when I have heard these performed,
1) as a player, the first time I heard Encounters II performed it made the hair on my back stand up.
2) as a patron, the Fafner solo filled the War Memorial Opera house with a foreboding sense of the extra-natural. And as a player wannabe, Mr. Spellman helped to form the sound in my head that I try to recall when I play.
