It seems to come down, a lot, to time spent. I gave up violin in frustration because I wasn't at the level of my peers, without considering that they had started at age three or five, and I had started at age eleven. If I had stayed with it, with a sympathetic teacher, for another five years or so, the story of my life may have been quite different. Instead of a music school burnout who played in regional orchestras, I might have been a MM graduate who played in major orchestras.

Best of luck, and just remember that it is persistence and consistency that will get you there. Kind of hard to do with kids that age, so be prepared. Go for it!
