I would sit down in front of a tuner, tune to A=443 (yup, a bit sharp) then mark the tuning slide with a pencil. Now, shove the main tuning slide all the way in. Now close your eyes and noodle around a bit. Open them to look at the tuner when you are playing a g (or have somebody else watch the tuner for you). If you can't get the g pretty darn close, i'd abandon the "master tuner" project and play the g 1,3 and the f# 1,2,3 (and pull 1) or 2,3,5.

If the above test is too flat, the only alternative i could think of is shortening the leadpipe a bit.

Is the G the only note that you are worried about? What other notes on the horn give you trouble?
