I think a horn des amke a difference to an extent, but you can give a cruddy player the bes horn in the world and it'l still be a cruddy sound. A good musican and a good moutpiece that fits you are what truly make a great horn.
As for horns, each brand has its quirks along with each indivual horn... Good luck, try lots of horns and be sure to have a teacher or someone else try it out or at least listen to you on it.
