Some of the things I have done in quintets that have helped immensely are:

1) Verne Reynolds' 150 Intonation Exercises - these things done at every rehearsal REALLY work!! (available through J.W. Pepper, Sheet Music of Portland, Robert King)

2) Bach chorales - practical intonation studies

3) Individual members of quintet meeting in pairs between full rehearsals (1st tpt with trombone, tuba with horn, 2nd trumpet with horn, etc). You really learn who has what and how things fit together.

4) Listen to as many different recordings of the work in question and OTHER works by that composer to begin to understand his/her musical language.

5) If you are not coached regularly, pool your money and pay for a couple of coaching sessions with an area professional. A fresh set of ears is always illuminating.

6) Set a few clear goals for the group. Plan a recital date or to do a competition. Goals create a certain sense of urgency in preparation.

Good luck and I hope this all helps!
