I am doing my DMA at North Texas in conducting, but the programs are the same. If you can get a scholarship to play in one of the ensembles you can get in-state tuition, which is very reasonable. You also get in-state tuition if you are a Teaching Fellow or Assistant. For performance, there is a chamber music requirement, I think its 2 credits, and 4 recitals, the 4th being a lecture-recital. There are also different options for your dissertation, ranging from a 25 page essay to a full thesis type paper. There are plenty of performance ensembles to play in. The degree is 60 hours (12 hours recital/dissertation credit), 12 hours of lessons, 6 hours of instrument literature, 12 hours of a related field, 6 hours of theory, 6 hours of history, and 6 hours of electives.
There are also tons of students to be found in the area for extra money. I hope this helps.
