There are 2341's and 2341's. The best 1241's are probably better than the worst new 2341's, but the best of the new ones fairly blow away the old ones.
I helped my wife's uncle buy a 1241 from Fedderly that is the best of its kind I've ever played. It's pretty darn good, but not as good as the better new-style 2341's.
I agree that the old ones were generally better built. But then most of them have been pretty battered, so it's a good thing.
