I don't understand the desire to make instruments, even student and marching instruments, in tune with the slides pushed all the way in. Given that the definition of "in tune" is so murky and variable, I would think any instrument that expects to be even remotely versatile would have all the slides set up short to allow adjustment in both directions. This to me is the whole point of designing an instrument around A-444--it works at A-440 with the slides pulled a moderate amount.
