are soaked in some sort of oil for a long time to seal the wood. Try soaking the mouthpiece. Rosewood is an EXTREMELY common wood for the crafting of fine recorders. I've played bass trombones with rosewood paddles for years, and my thumb and middle finger are still intact. My understanding is that it's the dust from working rosewood that people have the most problems with. So, if you're still alive after making it, you'll probably be ok.
