The wooden mouthpiece sounds like a neat idea. If I recall correctly, there is a company out there that makes trumpet mouthpieces out of exotic woods. So, your idea isn't new or weird in any way. Check out the Brasswind. I believe they sell the wooden trumpet mouthpieces. You might be able to read on the company website about how they make their mouthpieces.

About the urithane, I'm not a carpentry expert, however, I know that polyurithane has a tendency to scratch and flake. I would be scared of ingesting or inhaling the flakes. If you are sanding between coats then you are most likely removing that shiny flaking layer. I'm curious to read what others feel about this. Like I said, I'm by no means an expert.

Did you test out the mouthpiece BEFORE you started urithaning it? If so, how did it sound? Anyhow, keep up the good work and let us know how it turns out.
