Kabin Thomas and I had this discussion about 13 years ago. He felt the tuba was Hamlet and proceded to recite the monolouge while I played the tuba part. It really does fit with the words. I believe Kabin performed this on a Masters Recital at UofM like this. The trombones set the mood, dark and misterious, and the tuba interjects the words. I would suggest memorizing the dialouge and saying it in your mind as you play, probably will lend an intensity to the performance. I would also go out and get tapes or DVD's of all the great performances by Olivier, etc reciting and hear the FEELING they impart to the words. This is a great piece. Oh, yeah, recite the dialouge along with either the Jacobs or Hanks performances. It does work. Peace.
