Hi, David

Thanks. I realise the nomenclature is misleading, but I guess it's so accepted that a Bb trombone with a large bore and bell and at least one valve is considered a bass trombone, that I've given up on that one. I still refuse to call a large bore Eb tuba an EEb, however!

I wonder - I think I would call a trombone in Eb a contra left to my own devices; I don't know if there is any precedent for that or not.

I know that Thein make a very good cimbasso which apparently has a slide section available; unfortunately I've just bought a Yorkbrunner, so that's a little out of my reach at the moment (or so my wife seems to think, for some reason).

Didn't you recently buy a cimbasso? What kind did you get?

I spent several months playing Traviata on a pair of Rudolf Meinls several years ago - Steve Wick's is fantastic, but the one owned by Scottish Opera was kind of a dog - the intonation was very bad and it has a gold brass bell (Steve's is red brass, I believe) that didn't ring very well (I think it had been wrecked and repaired).

Anyway, I'll try and remember to post however it turns out.

Cheers,

Jeff
