This is a good strategy to me... I agree with everyone who feels that focus is important...but you don't want to ignore everyone else completely, because that would be rude. If I was auditioning for a local job (I'm a university student) and there was a tuba player there that I hadn't met before, I would want to meet him.
Just a quick hello is not too much to ask, I think.
